Knoxville is surrounded by water, much of it in the form of reservoirs created by the Tennessee Valley Authority. The TVA operates 49 dams throughout the 41,000-square-mile Tennessee River watershed. In East Tennessee, these impoundments include Cherokee, Douglas, Norris, Melton Hill, Fort Loudoun, Tellico, and Watts Bar lakes, all of which are well suited for powerboat recreation.
